Poem #8 - Do you remember?

Inspired by Billy Joels "we didn't start the fire" I thought I'd take a look back over the 50 odd years I've been alive, and try to capture some of the more important moments.

Do you remember?

Do you remember ’70, a decade’s dawn,

A world in motion, the seeds were sown,

From Apollo’s launch to disco’s reign,

The ‘70s kicked off a vibrant campaign.

In ’73, the oil crisis struck, Energy shocks, economies stuck,

But as nations faced an energy plight,

Renewable dreams took flight.

Do you remember, the history we’ve seen,

From the ‘70s till now, & the stories in-between,

From triumphs to trials, we’ve come so far,

Let’s cherish the journey, every scar.

In the ‘80s, we danced to new beats,

With Walkman and Pac-Man, our worlds would meet,

The Berlin Wall fell, a momentous cry,

As the world sought unity under the sky.

’86, Chernobyl’s disaster unmasked,

A haunting reminder, the dangers amassed,

But through nuclear fears and lessons drawn,

Renewed focus on safety was spawned.

The ‘90s brought change, the internet’s grace,

A digital age, connecting the human race,

Nelson Mandela’s freedom cry,

In South Africa, apartheid would die.

In ’98, the space race soared, The ISS in orbit, our dreams explored,

And as the world faced Y2K’s fear,

A new century dawned, hope was clear.

In ’04, the Ocean roared,

A tsunami’s wrath, lives were poured,

But from the depths of sorrow’s night,

Humanity united, bringing hope to light.

From 1970 to this very day, The tapestry woven, we mustn’t stray,

Through highs and lows, we’ll stand together,

Embracing history, now and forever.

In 2019, bushfires blazed, Australia’s heart, the land was grazed,

Communities rose with strength so grand,

In unity, they’d firmly stand.

Do you remember, the history we’ve seen,

Do you Remember?

From the ‘70s till now, & the stories between,

Do you Remember?

From triumphs to trials, we’ve come so far,

Do you Remember?

Let’s cherish the journey, every scar.

Do you Remember?
