Poem #9 - An Australian Story

Following on from Do you remember? I then thought I would take a look at Australia's story since federation.

An Australian Story

In nineteen hundred one, we came as one,

United by dreams, under the golden sun,

Federation’s birth, a nation we’d become,

Australia’s story, not just begun.

Gallipoli’s heroes, brave and true,

Through the hardships, we’ll remember you,

Sydney’s bridge, a symbol so grand,

Connecting hearts, across the land.

Its not just a story, it’s the Australian story.

The roaring twenties, Qantas took to flight,

Wings to the world, reaching new heights,

The thirties brought the bridge to life,

A union of souls, conquering strife.

Its not just a story, it’s the Australian story.

Amidst the darkness, World War’s embrace,

Through the forties, we’d find our grace,

A nation rebuilt, stronger in the wake,

Through thick and thin, together we’d make.

Its not just a story, it’s the Australian story.

Fifty’s Snowy Mountains, a vision to unfold,

Diverse hands, working for the gold,

Decimal currency, a change so bold,

A new chapter written, stories to be told.

Its not just a story, it’s the Australian story.

The seventies saw justice, a rightful plight,

Land rights acknowledged, in a brand new light,

Independence claimed, with a resolute might,

Australia stands tall, embracing the night.

Its not just a story, it’s the Australian story.

Nineties bid success, Olympics in sight,

Sydney’s pride, shining bright,

A national apology, tears to mend,

Healing wounds, hearts to mend.

Its not just a story, it’s the Australian story.

With love and acceptance, we break the chains,

Same-sex love, freedom reigns,

Through the decades, a tale we weave,

Australia’s spirit, will never leave.

Its not just a story, it’s the Australian story.
