Mental Health First Aid is an evidence based course that is continually revised and evaluated where the participant will learn the skills to offer first aid for a mental health problem or crisis. You will leave the course knowing the ALGEE action plan and confident that you can make a difference.
A 2 day course where you will learn how to assist an adult who may be experiencing a mental health problem or mental health crisis until appropriate professional help is received or the crisis resolves, using a practical, evidence-based action plan.
The course is based on guidelines developed through the expert consensus of people with lived experience of mental health problems and professionals.
Broken up into 4 sessions covering Mental Illness, Depression, Anxiety Problems, Psycosis, and Substance Use Problems, you will leave the course far better equipped to render assistance to someone experiencing a mental health crisis. And confident that you can do so safely.
I have found, since becoming coordinator of the South Adelaide Black Dog Ride that these skills have come in handy on numerous occasions. It is one thing to ask "R U OK?" But we must be able to follow that question up with sound facts and knowledge, should the answer be "no, I'm not ok."
Many times I have been asked for help, to assist someone, that is having a mental health crisis, and without the skills i have learned in MHFA I would not have been able to deal with those situations appropriately, and may well have made the situation worse!
Fortunately for me Black Dog Ride funded me. Initially to do the MHFA course, and then to do the instructors course. And now it is time for me to share the knowledge. To share what I have found to be an invaluable asset.
